I’m wondering what happened when there were female Avatars born in the Northern Water Tribe, before Katara fought to be trained. The distribution of Avatars means this should’ve happened several times in the past. And furthermore, what happened when female Avatars from elsewhere needed training?
Maybe the moratorium on training female water benders was a recent thing. I could believe that- women are not always oppressed to the same degree, so it’s quite possible that female water benders were regularly trained in the Northern Tribe, and then something happened (or a mentality developed) that led to them being limited to healing.
